For many believers, The Chosen” has revolutionized the way they engage with Scripture. Biblical scholar and author Brandon Robbins shared with Charisma Media how the series transformed his perspective, taking the disciples off their unreachable pedestals and revealing them as real, flawed people—just like us.

“We begin to get this different picture of who the disciples were and what their story is,” Robbins says. “It changes the way that we read the Bible.”

Too often, we imagine the disciples as spiritual giants who had it all figured out. However, “The Chosen” reminds us that Jesus called ordinary, broken individuals—tax collectors, zealots and outcasts—showing that God’s grace is greater than our past.

This fresh lens has ignited a global hunger for Scripture, drawing people deeper into the Word.

what would it have truly been like to
have met Jesus 2,000 years ago you get
to be a disciple and you leave your
family you leave your kids you leave
your job you leave your home you leave
everything to go follow Jesus and I I
think one of the things that would
really transform the church in America
is if we put way more emphasis on that
well Brandon Robbins it is great to have
you here on Charisma and we are talking
about the Forgotten teachings of Jesus
which you have just compiled in your new
book by that same name and uh really
you've you've been able to connect with
this great series The Chosen in a way
that has not just been you're commenting
about the series but you are
highlighting things that people might
have overlooked and your YouTube channel
itself is worth checking out uh and I
definitely want to encourage everybody
to subscribe to that one because you're
going to learn so much of the wisdom and
depth of knowledge that Brandon has of
the scripture so Brandon it's great to
have you here for this conversation oh
thank you so much for having me it's
great to be on with you so let's talk
about your journey I guess I mean you
you started your YouTube channel a few
years before or about a year or so
before the chosen videos started from
you but you're a pastor you have a you
know you you've been preaching the
gospel for a while uh just tell us a
little bit about yourself tell us about
your life so yes I'm a pastor and have
been since 2008 um but you know
obviously viously my relationship with
the Lord begins long before that I grew
up in church and was part of a family um
who went all to the same church and we
sat in the same two pews and I just had
this really wonderful Church experience
growing up where the church itself
really was my family but I also think I
had that experience many people have
where your relationship with Jesus is
something that kind of is given to you
and at some point you have to claim it
for your own and for me that happened
when I was about 15 or 16 years old I
got in some trouble I played a prank on
somebody that that got me in some pretty
deep trouble and um I felt like my life
was about to turn upside down and so I
remember one night being in my bed and
praying and just saying you know God I
need you so much to get me through this
but then also having this overwhelming
feeling that I couldn't just keep asking
God for things and let that be what my
relationship was like like God is just
some sort of elevated Santa Claus who I
go to when I need things but I I needed
to give myself fully to that
relationship ship and so on that night I
just remember saying you know whether
you get me through this or not I'm yours
and I don't know that I knew what it
meant but it evolved into pretty quickly
a call to Ministry and just a deepening
relationship with Jesus over the next
few years and uh went to college and you
know Was preparing to go into Ministry
and then went to grad school and
Seminary and studied everything I needed
to study and then have really just had
the blessing of being able to be a
pastor for the past 17 years and so I've
served as an an associate I've uh served
in small churches I've started churches
and now I just serve an amazing Church
uh now here in Virginia and just love
getting to see what God does through the
local church but then in the midst of
that I think there's always just this
been this yearning inside of me to be
able to to just teach and to be able to
share the things I learn with others and
to be able to spread that and so a
couple of years ago I started a YouTube
channel and originally it was just a
place where I could put out videos for
my church instead of like doing a
newsletter or something like that and
then it evolved from there into well I'm
learning all these things about how to
grow churches and keep a healthy church
and so maybe I can share that with
others and then it just kind of waffled
around for a while because I never
really found an audience and it wasn't
until I did a video on uh season one
episode one of the chosen where finally
it hit that audience and I knew that I
finally had something that I could share
that I loved that other people love too
and really what it was is it wasn't the
chosen that I was talking about but it
was the world of Jesus and for about
five or six years at that point I'd been
just reading book after book after book
about what was it like to really live at
the time of Jesus what was it like to
walk with him as a Jewish rabbi how does
that change the way we read scripture
and it all started by reading a book
called sitting at the feet of Rabbi
Jesus the book that just changed my life
and so I dove deep into that and then
the chosen comes around and there
depicting the world of Jesus in such a
really uniquely Accurate Way from
anything else I'd ever seen and so I uh
just have the gift to being able to
share those sorts of things with others
whether about the chosen or about
scripture anything else yeah having the
the cultural understanding and
understanding that context that Jesus
was even though the Bible was written
for us it wasn't written directly to us
I mean we're we are Jesus was speaking
to a first century Jewish audience and
so the letters in red were really
focused for that audience and so the way
that they receive it is different the
way that we receive it you know 2,000
years later uh in the United States and
we are now of a western mindset instead
of a the Jewish mindset so there's so
many things that we that we miss and so
as you were talking about that book
sitting at the feet of Rabbi Jesus um
what are some of the things that really
stood out to you that kind of changed
your perspective and then you were
excited to share with the audience uh on
your YouTube channel whenever the chosen
came out and kind of gave you that
platform yeah you know one of the big
things that I learned as I read that
book was what it took to be a disciple
and what that process was like and how
hard it was um not everybody got to be a
disciple I think in my mind discipleship
was really just those things you did to
act out your faith so that's going to
church it's reading the Bible it's
praying like that's what it looks like
to be a disciple and so in that book
what I learned is that disciple was
somebody who literally gave up
everything to follow a rabbi and they
had to be selected by that Rabbi so not
everybody got to be a disciple you know
you went through all these levels of
education and at each one you might be
told you're not good enough and then
finally it comes to that point where you
know if you are good enough then a rabbi
will say Lear come follow me and now you
get to be a disciple and you leave your
family you leave your kids you leave
your job you leave your home you leave
everything to follow Jesus and so we I
talked about this in the videos that I
would you know put together about the
chosen because that's really what's
happening in season one is that Jesus is
going around and calling these people to
be his disciples but with the knowledge
of what it was really like back then now
we realize that you know when Peter's in
that boat he's in that boat because at
some point somebody said you're not good
enough you don't have what it takes to
be a disciple and yet here the Messiah
comes and says no no I want you to
follow me and you look at Matthew right
a tax collector somebody everybody would
have said is absolutely not qualified to
be a disciple and Jesus says no you come
follow me and so then we begin to get
this different picture of who the
disciples were and what their story is
leading into that moment and it just
changes the way that we read the Bible
and that's one of the things I love so
much about the show and being able to
share these things is when you go back
when you start studying scripture after
that you see it with a whole different
set of eyes and now you're just looking
at everything differently because you
know something that allows you to kind
of get pulled into that context and into
that first century world and you feel a
bit more like you're there and you're
seeing things the way that they saw it
yeah I think also the one of the things
that's a benefit from The Chosen is that
the the apostles uh or the first
disciples are no longer just stained
glass figures at churches with with you
know these old beards and you know these
long cloaks and things like that where
you know we want to honor them obviously
and that's what those pictures represent
but that's kind of the picture that we
have allowed to be painted in our minds
and so the chosen kind of puts really
Flesh on a lot of these the you know the
people that we just read about in in the
Bible there um so let's let's talk about
some some cultural things uh you said
about the you know Jesus was calling the
fishermen because they were fishermen
because they were told at one point that
they were no longer that they were not
good enough and Jesus calls out the
disciples in in very powerful ways in
the show and one of them that is really
very interesting to me is the the
Matthew character and I know that was
one of your one of your first big videos
is the truth about Matthew um what made
you dive deep into the truth about
Matthew you know Matthew in the in the
show The Chosen is a very unique
character the way that they've depicted
him giving him just these sort of
Asperger sort of Tendencies um you know
I think really draws people's attention
to him and in some ways I think helps
them to connect with him because just he
has so many idiot syncr and they can see
themselves maybe in his flaws or they
just find empathy with his character so
so I knew Matthew was somebody that
people were really interested in and it
was actually a series I I did where we
went through multiple disciples we went
through Peter we went through John these
disciples who are really talked about
more in scripture but with Matthew
especially what I knew was that there
was so much in his background to being a
tax collector that I didn't know growing
up I mean just like the phrase tax
collector to me sounded like okay just
somebody who works for the IRS it's
their job to collect taxes but that's
not even close to what this was I mean
in the first century World basically
what Matthew did is he kind of um you
know worked to get this job he vied for
this job of being a tax collector wanted
to get selected he made a bid he would
pay roam all this money in advance and
then he would collect whatever he wanted
and so he would collect all kinds of
money if somebody owed a th000 bucks
he'd make him pay 2,000 and he profited
all of what was on top of it and then he
could tax people for random reasons he
could pull people over on the side of
the road and say hey you've got a cart
full of goods you need to pay me taxes
if you want to go through and so he was
just devastating his own people and
that's the important thing to remember
is that Matthew is Jewish right he's not
some random Gentile who's coming in and
hurting the Jewish people he doesn't
care about these are his people his
people who have been oppressed for
hundreds of years thousands of years you
know by one culture after another one
Empire after another and he's adding to
that and aiding and abetting the people
who now control the land that's supposed
to go um belong to God and so when we
understand that we understand where he's
coming
from what his family thinks about him
how rejected he feels and so now we
understand not only what it means for
him to follow Jesus why following Jesus
is such a transformation of his heart
and his life and why he kind of needs
that but
also what he's giving up I mean he
literally walks away from a tax Booth he
walks away from all this stuff he
already paid money for and says I'm I
don't need any of it because I've got
Jesus and all of a sudden that that kind
of puts that into context in our own
lives and what it looks like to walk
away and and why we would that is so
powerful whenever you really think about
that because if you don't understand the
context of what he was walking away from
and even what you just said there I mean
I thought I knew some I thought I knew
some things about what it meant to be a
tax collector but I never thought about
the the way that he was extorting and
how he was free to do that because he
already paid you know for these
different things so um thank you you sh
you've taught me something already in
this interview I love it um so you have
a p you're a pastor you have a a
Congregation of your own and so
obviously you're not teaching about the
chosen every single week because the
chosen isn't scripture as you as you are
are openly saying and at Dallas Jenkins
the creator of the chosen openly says
that this is not scripture but um what
are some of these other things that you
you enjoy teaching about as well what
really gives me passion is anything that
I feel like I can teach that allows
somebody to go back and read the Bible
in a way where they can look at a
passage that they never understood and
understand it suddenly or they can look
at something that they thought meant one
thing and now realizes it mean realize
it means something else or even just be
able to feel like they're there
and so you know do it in a variety of
ways so for instance one of the series
that we had kick off the year at the
church that I serve is a series called
shama where we looked at this prayer
that Jesus prayed twice a day every
single day the prayer that he says is
the greatest of all the Commandments to
love the Lord your God with all your
heart soul and strength and what that
really means and how we build our life
around that and how that word shama
means to hear and to obey and so what
does it look like as Disciples of Jesus
to try to hear God speak like Jesus did
and to then figure out how do we obey
that and what are the pictures of that
that we see in scripture where you know
they're hearing God speak what process
did they go through to figure out how to
actually act on that or to know that
it's God's voice um and so really just
taking these things that were normal for
Jesus these practices and customs and
helping people to see that that's not
old stuff it's not stuff that died out
years ago we didn't figure out
necessarily A Better Way
and if we can kind of connect oursel to
those roots of who Jesus was and how he
lived out his faith all of a sudden
scripture opens up to us but also our
relationship with the Lord can have New
Dimensions that we've never even
experienced before yeah as we open up to
the Lord and let him kind of lead and
guide us as we you know Proverbs 35 and
6 trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding
in all your ways acknowledge Him and He
will make your path straight um as you
were starting these videos about the
chosen I I know that you you almost
decided to kind of give up on that can
you tell us that story and what what
happened after that it's so funny to
think back on it now
because it's hard to remember how um
exhausted I was in that moment and how
kind of hopeless it looked in the future
but I mean I'd been on YouTube for at
that point going on two years and I had
put out every kind of video I could
think of and was trying to you know
Reach people through this or that thing
and nothing stuck and I essentially as
we got into 2021 said to myself I've got
a lot going on here at the church you
know I'm their Pastor I want to just
give my heart to some things going on
here and working on things going on in
the church and so you know this YouTube
thing takes a lot of time so Lord I'm
just going to step away from this and if
it if you want it to thrive later then
awesome I'll be ready to come back but
otherwise I just release it to you and
it was probably about a week later where
all of a sudden I just checked YouTube
randomly and it had just exploded it was
that one video on episode one of season
one of the chosen where all of a sudden
the channel went from you know 8800
subscribers to 8,000 in a matter of just
days and the the video went from a 100
views to 100,000 views over the next
month and what I realized in that moment
what was so exciting about that moment
is I think as a person who tries to put
out content on YouTube or in any place
you're always searching for like what is
it that people are hungry for that you
are also passionate about and I realized
that in that moment like people want to
know about the world of Jesus and it's
something I'm passionate about so if we
get to take this journey together and I
get to share these things I mean what
more could you ask for like it's just
such a beautiful gift to be able to live
out of your passion that way and then
just to see how God had taken that thing
that I thought was dead and brought it
to life in a way that I never imagined
really is something I try to constantly
remember I mean I remember the first
time you know we got a thousand views on
a video and how ecstatic I was over that
and I never want to take that for
granted I never want to get to that
point where it's like oh man a thousand
views is nothing no a thousand views is
a huge thing like a thousand people were
moved by that and so to always just kind
of keep grounded in that and just
realize that that I have this blessed
opportunity to share things that God
uses to change people's lives and never
want to take that for granted and so
you've actually been able to develop a
community that those thousand views
turned into a thousand viewers and then
they became a community around you know
the the content you're producing but
there's um you I know you've LED tours
to Israel or you've taken tours to
Israel with with these with these groups
of people um can you talk about that of
what what it is for you to be able to
teach in these areas in Israel where
this stuff actually happened I know from
my own experience being in Israel um in
what
2003 uh it was eye openening in so many
ways and I would love to go back uh with
somebody that could actually teach the
way that you teach and uh to be able to
have my eyes opened up even even more
with that cultural context there what's
that like for you to teach there in
those places with the people that have
gravitated towards this this virtual
congregation that God has given you
there's really nothing like it um it's
been an interesting you know past year
or so because of everything going on in
Israel not being able to go back there
we're actually planning a trip um in
August August 4th through the 14th um
that's still open if you or anybody else
wants to go on that um but we're going
to be going back to
Israel but what I love about it so much
is you know people always told me it's
the it's the Fifth Gospel right it's
this place where you can experience the
Bible in a way you can't experience
anywhere else and I think it's one thing
to hear that and it's another to
actually walk into a place and realize
that that threshold right there in the
ground that used to be a first century
synagogue is a place where Jesus's feet
actually touched and crossed and that
Mikvah that ritual bath that's sitting
right outside of the you know the um the
synagogue and kazim is one that Jesus
would have gone into to realize like you
are in this space and then to go to
places that you've heard about forever
and to see them forever reinterpreted so
on my first trip to Israel I was just
going along with others and I was a
student and we we hiked it and I spent
days in the desert in the wilderness
down in the ngev just hiking and you
know on different paths and things like
that and in my mind the desert was
always this Wasteland where you know the
people just had to endure it before they
could go to the truly great place and
yet the truth is when you're there you
realize that yeah I mean the desert it
doesn't have water it's a hard place to
live but God may be more present in that
desert than any place you've ever been
um in fact God says like the Wilderness
is mine like this is where I am with you
and and this is where God provided and
there story after Story and so to
experience that and to realize that
there is Beauty in this place and that
even in the midst of our darkest most
wilderness moments in our lives God is
present and there's Beauty in that um it
just it made all of those experien es
and all of those stories that I'd heard
about come to life for me in a new way
and so I just love the opportunity to
share that with people you know tell
them a scripture that maybe they heard
and say it happened here right or to
stand in a place like cesaria Philippi
and to say you know you may have read
this moment where Jesus says on this
rock I will build my church and the
Gates of Hell will not overcome it and
it' be like there's the gates right but
here's everything else going on in this
place that ties into that passage and
these words Jesus is using that kind of
get lost to us in English but if you
look back at what he said in the Greek
or if you look at what his counterpart
is in the Hebrew all of a sudden this
whole place looks different to see when
that clicks with somebody and now they
can't read the Bible the same way again
I just think it's it's a beautiful gift
I was glad to hear you say about the to
say that about the neev um whenever I
was there the the places that I felt the
presence of the Lord the strongest and I
just felt his peace the Nega desert was
was one of them and Getty was another um
and then the the garden tomb would be my
third favorite place that that I was at
where I felt a tangible presence of the
Lord and I still I totally agree with
that the negative is something that
people don't normally talk about but the
Lord is with you in the wilderness there
and man it's good to know that that that
that resonated with you too yeah I mean
and I had a a particularly unique
experience there so like I said we hiked
it and we were going up and down hills
and mountains and on days one and two my
knees started to give out and I remember
one day just walking I mean every step
was excruciating um and so I had these
braces on and all this other stuff and
the day we went to the ngev um we were
about to start hiking there I was like I
don't know how I'm going to walk like
Lord I I just like I need a miracle and
as I was hiking I just had this moment
um where I'm just asking God what do I
do what do I do and God says just take
it off take off the
brace and from that moment forward I did
not have one ounce of pain for the rest
of the trip and for me it was this
powerful moment of realizing like God is
in this Wilderness and healing happens
in this Wilderness and there is just
something special about this place um
and it it's just it was one of the most
powerful experiences of my life so you
had braces on your on your legs on your
knees before that hike so you you were
going into this hike knowing that there
was that there was going to be some
trials with that can I ask what happened
that you already had braces with that it
wasn't obviously probably wasn't just a
sprained knee or something like that
from the day before but what was going
on yeah I mean I I guess in my life I'd
had knee pain here and there um and so I
took these things with me these things
to put around my legs to kind of give
them stability it wasn't like a heavy
metal brace was kind of like something
you can wrap around it um but the crazy
thing about that last day when you know
the pain went away and the healing
happened is I put those same braces on
my legs and it was this constant
irritation it was like fiberglass was
running against my skin and I was like
how am I going to do this like not only
are my knees in pain but now I just feel
this irritating I'm going to start you
know bleeding or it's just me this awful
excruciating thing and so that's what's
on my mind as I'm walking in Lord what
in the world do I do and that's when I
hear that that voice say just take it
off and it you know defied logic it's
like you know where you're like in your
head and you're like um was that me like
did I say that to me or like was this
really the Lord and just this
undeniable sense that like no like you
just need to do this and so the next
time we stopped hiking I took him off
and and that was it so since you've had
your own healing Miracle like that can
you talk about the teachings or the the
healings of Jesus and some of the
teachings that you have derived around
that to kind of give people more more
understanding what I think is so
fascinating something I missed for years
as I read that is that when that man is
healed Jesus is pretty clear that it's
not that man's Faith that's healed him
it's the faith of his
friends and one of the things that
really sticks out to me about that
something that I've learned by you know
being in that culture in Israel but also
just studying so much about the world of
of Jesus is just how important the
connection is between people right so we
live in a very individualistic culture
where it's all about me and Jesus and
how I navigate that relationship but at
the time of Jesus it was collectivist it
was it was us and Jesus like they're
really you you almost couldn't separate
this individual thing from the community
as a whole what happened to you impacted
everybody else and so in that moment I
think it's this powerful thing that
allows us to realize just the the power
of being in community and the power of
the body of Christ around us that it's
not just about me and my prayers right
but it's about the prayers of the people
around you it's about the people who are
in that Community who are supporting you
and lifting you up it's about the faith
of the people around you I mean in that
instance that man is healed because of
the faith of the people around him and I
I think one of the things that would
really transform the church in
America is if we put way more emphasis
on that you know instead of talking so
much about how do I have a personal time
with Jesus and an individual V
devotional time really just like how do
we immerse ourselves in community and
how do we together interpret scripture
through the lens of being around each
other and how God is speaking through
all of us and how do we you know
interpret scripture through how does
this not just impact me but how does it
impact us as a group how does it impact
impact the church as a whole just the
way we would begin to function I think
would be so different and I see it very
powerfully in that in that story there
wow that's so true we especially in the
American mindset we are very
individualistic and uh we definitely put
down the the need for other people and
that's that is so important in the
scriptures as we read that as you just
said man that is something that uh that
I think everybody that's watching this
and or listening to this really needs to
grab a hold of that you're not in this
alone you are in this life together with
the people that God has has connected
you with and the faith of your friends
can lead to healing that'll change your
life forever and Brandon the I know that
the chosen has changed your life quite a
bit we talked about that in this in this
conversation and to the point where
you've written this book The the
Forgotten teachings of Jesus and Dallas
Jenkins actually wrote the forward which
I think that's a huge honor that's
really cool that nice seal of approval
or that stamp of approval there but in
your own words how has the chosen
changed your life
you touched on this a little bit earlier
um one of the things that I think the
chosen has done for me and for so many
other people is allow the gospel to come
to life in a way that enables us to see
it a bit differently and I would say a
bit more Faithfully than we have in the
past and so you mentioned the whole
thing about the disciples and they used
to kind of be on this these pedestals
and that's very much how I felt about it
when I would study it I would look at
scripture and I would just think
everybody's perfect yeah Peter had his
moment Judas had his moment but in
general these are in my mind old men who
have figured it all out and they were
the best of the best and that's why they
follow Jesus and that's just not true
and what the show I think does such a
great job of is not just showing the
fallibility of every one of these
disciples but also allowing them to be
unique enough so that we can see
ourselves in them and in the midst of
our imperfection to know that Jesus
still chooses us that God's grace is
that big and that the Lord can use us
despite how weak and messed up we may be
and how many mistakes we've made and
what our past may look like you know I
mean some of the people who are
following Jesus are are people you know
like zealots who have this kind of
violent murderous path or you've got
Matthew who destroyed his own people and
wrecked lives you know you have people
just with terrible pasts and yet there
they are with
Jesus and so it allows me and others to
read the scriptures and see ourselves in
them in an entirely new way and I think
that's one of the things that I I love
so much about what the show does it's
not scripture it's absolutely one of
those things where it's a jumping off
point and then you definitely need to go
read your Bible and you need to study it
and you need to know what's true and
what's not and what's Hollywood and
what's you know actually scriptural but
at the same time it it's changing the
world I mean it's a movement that is
global where people are hungry for the
Bible in a way that they have not been
that I that I can remember in my
lifetime
and it's just a real it's such a
blessing to be able to be a part of that
and I guess the other way I would say
it's it's changed my life is it opened
the door for now me to be able to be a
part of that movement and have this
opportunity to be able to share these
things with others that I don't know
that I would have ever had otherwise
that is so cool and getting people into
the scriptures is what we really want we
want people to understand those
forgotten teachings of Jesus not that
Jesus forgotten them but we've forgotten
them over time and we need to get back
to those original ones thank you so much
Brandon for helping point out that this
is what Jesus was saying this is who he
was saying it to this is what he meant
in that context and making it come alive
in in a powerful way for a modern
audience thank you so much for your
